6 Tips for Saving Money When You Travel

savings for traveling

One of the best ways to broaden your horizons and experience other cultures is to travel. Meeting new people and seeing new places can be exciting and fulfilling, but with all of the costs involved, traveling can get very expensive. Many people save for months or even years before a big trip. Before you embark on your next journey, here are some simple things you can do for saving money when traveling.

1. Set a Budget Before the Trip

Setting a budget for spending before you leave for your trip may help you to be more mindful of the purchases you make as you travel. By setting aside a certain amount ahead of time for souvenirs or splurging on fancy dinners, it may be easier to keep yourself on track and avoid spending more than expected.

2. Travel During the Off-Season

A lot of things may influence the cost of airlines, hotels, and even excursions, including the time of the year. Prices may be higher around holidays and seasonal events because more people tend to travel around these times.

To save a bit of cash on your plane tickets and hotel stays, booking in the off-season may really make a difference. This may even help you to avoid large tourist crowds, making the experience more enjoyable overall.

3. Book a Midweek Flight

For many people, traveling to their destination on Fridays and weekends may be more convenient, but a quick browse through airline websites will reveal that flights are often more expensive on weekends than on weekdays. If it’s possible for you to book your airline tickets for the middle of the week, you may find that these less popular flights are more affordable.

4. Keep an Open Mind on Where You Stay

Hotels may seem like the easiest option when it comes to finding a place to stay on your trip, but with a bit of research, you may discover some more cost-friendly ideas just around the corner.

Not only could you find a great deal by checking out other options, but you may even end up having a unique and exciting experience when you open your mind to trying something new. You could rent an Airbnb, try the bed and breakfast down the street, or even stay at a hostel. It’s all about finding whatever best suits your travel needs (and your budget).

5. Walk as Much as Possible

As you explore new places, expenses on transportation can add up quickly. Walking as much as possible may really make a difference by cutting costs on public transportation or renting a car, for example. Not only could walking save you money, but you may also discover interesting things to do that you may have otherwise missed on your path.

6. Be on the Lookout for Free Excursions

Many destinations often have a wide breadth of things to do, such as visiting museums and taking tours. While it may be a fun idea to book some unique excursions ahead of time, looking for free attractions while you travel may be a great way to have an interesting experience for a low cost.

At Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union, we recommend that you tell us about your travel plans so we can notate your accounts appropriately. Taking that extra step before your trip may help to make sure we can keep your account running smoothly while you are away.

One of the amazing things about exploring the world is that anyone can do it. With thoughtful planning and budgeting, you can have an amazing travel experience without hurting your wallet.
