Toy Loans: Refinancing Your Recreational Vehicles for Ultimate Summer Savings

Aug 12, 2026

Georgia Heritage FCU Member Services Representative sits in her office at her desk, smiling.

Got a boat, RV/camper, motorcycle, or jet ski sitting in the driveway with a payment that costs more than it should? This guide is for people who live, work, worship, or attend school in Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan counties, or their immediate family members, who are ready to put their toy loan to work for them instead of against them.

As a member-owned credit union, we set our rates and terms with our members’ interests in mind, not shareholder profit. In this guide, we will walk through how refinancing works, which vehicles qualify, and how our current promotion can help you save.

What is a Toy Loan?

“Toy loan” is a casual term most lenders use for financing recreational vehicles and watercraft, purchases outside of everyday transportation.

That typically includes:

  • Boats and personal watercraft (fishing boats, pontoons, jet skis)
  • Motorcycles (cruisers, sport bikes, touring bikes) and ATVs
  • Recreational vehicles (RVs, motorhomes, campers, travel trailers)

What to Consider

When comparing loans, two numbers matter most:

Interest rate is what the lender charges annually for borrowing, expressed as a percentage of your remaining balance. Even a one or two point reduction adds up on a multi-year loan. Your rate is influenced by your credit score, the vehicle’s age, and the loan amount.

Loan term is how long you have to repay. Longer terms mean smaller monthly payments but more interest paid in total. Shorter terms cost more per month but reduce the overall interest. When refinancing, it’s worth comparing both scenarios to see which tradeoff fits your situation.

Toy loans are usually simple interest loans, meaning you pay interest only on the remaining balance, not on the original amount borrowed. For boats and RVs, terms can run up to 12 years depending on the loan amount and the vehicle’s model year. Motorcycle loans typically cap around 84 months. Your rate, monthly payment, and term are fixed at closing, and depend on the lender, your credit profile, and the vehicle’s age. Older or higher-mileage vehicles may qualify for shorter terms or require a larger minimum loan amount.

When Should I Refinance a Loan?

Refinancing isn’t the right move for everyone. It tends to make the most sense when one or more of these apply:

  • You financed through a dealership: Dealer financing is convenient at the point of sale but not always the best rate. Moving the loan to an institution for a lower rate or payment is one of the most common reasons people refinance.
  • Your credit score has improved: A higher score now than when you originally borrowed means you likely qualify for a better rate.
  • Your monthly payment is a strain: A lower payment can free up cash even if the total interest cost doesn’t change dramatically.
  • You have time left on the loan: The more balance and time remaining, the more potential benefit. If you’re nearly paid off, refinancing probably won’t make much of a difference.

What Are the Benefits of Refinancing a Toy Loan?

Refinancing a toy loan is a great choice for those looking to lower their payments or find a better interest rate. With the right lender, you can often do both! Some may even run promotions that offer a payment-free window before your new loan kicks in.

Refinancing at Georgia Heritage FCU

GHFCU is currently running a toy loan refinance promotion for members with qualifying boats, campers, motorcycles, and jet skis. If you’re carrying a loan at a higher rate elsewhere, here’s what GHFCU offers:

  • Competitive rates: As a member-owned credit union, GHFCU isn’t driven by shareholder profit. That typically means better rates than what you’d get through dealer financing or a traditional bank.
  • Long-term savings: A lower rate secured through GHFCU can reduce the total interest you pay before the loan is paid off, sometimes by a significant amount depending on your current rate and remaining balance.
  • 60 days payment-free: GHFCU is offering a limited-time promotion, after you start your loan your first payment won’t be due for 60 days. It’s a practical buffer that gives you some breathing room right at the start of the loan.
  • Loan protection: When you refinance with GHFCU, you have the option to add loan protection coverage to your new loan. It’s customized to fit your needs and budget, and the cost can be rolled into your loan payment. Learn more on our Loan Protection page.

What Recreational Vehicles Qualify for Refinancing?

General Refinancing Qualifications

Most lenders that refinance recreational vehicle loans cover a similar range of vehicles: boats and personal watercraft like pontoons, fishing boats, and jet skis; RVs, campers, and motorhomes; and motorcycles, though some lenders exclude certain high-value brands from promotional offers.
