Credit 101: What Makes Up Your Score & First-Time Credit Card Dos and Don’ts

Understanding credit can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re just getting started. Whether you’re a high school senior preparing for college, a young professional building independence, or simply new to borrowing, establishing strong credit is one of the most important financial steps you can take.

At Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union, we believe financial education is key to long-term success. Let’s break down what makes up your credit score and how to use your first credit card responsibly.

What Makes Up Your Credit Score?

Your credit score is a three-digit number lenders use to evaluate how reliably you manage debt. While scoring models vary, most are based on these five key factors:

1. Payment History (35%)

This is the most important factor. Paying on time, every time, has the greatest impact on your score. Even one late payment can cause a noticeable drop.

Tip: Set up automatic payments or calendar reminders to stay on track.

2. Credit Utilization (30%)

This refers to how much of your available credit you’re using. For example, if you have a $1,000 limit and carry a $700 balance, you’re using 70% of your credit — which is considered high.

Best practice: Keep your utilization below 30%, and ideally closer to 10% when possible.

3. Length of Credit History (15%)

The longer your accounts are open, the better it is for your score. This is why it’s generally smart to keep older accounts open, even if you don’t use them often.

4. Credit Mix (10%)

Having different types of credit — such as a credit card, auto loan, or student loan — can positively influence your score.

5. New Credit Inquiries (10%)

Opening several accounts in a short period can temporarily lower your score. Only apply for new credit when you truly need it.

First-Time Credit Card: Dos and Don’ts

Getting your first credit card is an exciting milestone, but it comes with responsibility. Here’s how to start strong.

DO: Start with Small Purchases

Use your card for manageable expenses like gas or groceries. This helps you build payment history without the risk of overspending.

DO: Pay Your Balance in Full

Paying your statement balance each month, on or before the due date, helps you avoid interest charges and build positive credit habits from the start.

DO: Monitor Your Account

Review transactions regularly and keep track of your spending. Awareness builds discipline.

DON’T: Max Out Your Card

High balances hurt your credit utilization ratio — and your score.

DON’T: Miss a Payment

Late payments can stay on your credit report for years and are one of the hardest dings to recover from.

DON’T: Treat It Like Extra Income

A credit card is a financial tool, not free money. Every charge is a commitment to repay.

Why Building Credit Early Matters

Strong credit can help you qualify for better interest rates, secure housing, finance a vehicle, and even open doors to certain career opportunities. The habits you develop early can shape your financial future for decades.

That’s why financial education and literacy are such a priority at Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union.

Supporting Students Beyond Banking

At Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union, financial education doesn’t stop at helping members build strong credit. We’re proud to invest in the next generation through annual college and technical school scholarship opportunities.

Each year, eligible high school seniors who are members — or dependents of members in good standing — have the opportunity to apply for scholarship funding to support their continued education. As part of the application process, students are encouraged to demonstrate academic achievement, community involvement, and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Because membership is open to individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan counties, and their immediate family members, many local families have access to these opportunities.

Scholarship details, award amounts, and application deadlines are announced annually. We encourage students and parents to check our website or contact us directly for the most current information.

Start Building Your Financial Future Today

Whether you’re applying for your first credit card, learning how credit works, or preparing for college, the team at Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union is here to help.
