What is a Credit Union?

Jun 10, 2019

What is a credit union, and what is the difference between a credit union and a bank? Contact one of our associates to learn more.
You probably know that there are differences between credit unions and banks. However, you might not be exactly sure what they are. For starters, a credit union is a cooperative financial institution, owned and controlled by the people who use its services. Credit unions are not-for-profit and exist to provide a safe, convenient place where members may save money and may get loans at reasonable rates.

Who Can Join a Credit Union?

Generally, individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in the area a specific credit union operates, and their immediate family members, may gain membership to a credit union. If you do not qualify to join a specific credit union, here is a list of shared CO-OP branches that many credit unions connect with, so you can see which ones are near you!

Why Should We Join a Credit Union?

From various checking and savings account options to many consumer loan options, credit unions offer many of the same services as traditional banks. However, because credit unions are not-for-profit, oftentimes the interest rates they are able to offer you may be much better. Credit unions are owned by their members, which means they put all of their members first. Although there are fewer branch locations for each specific credit union, they oftentimes work through a network of credit unions, such as the CO-OP shared branches, where you can handle most of your banking needs at one of the 5,000+ shared branches. Most banks don’t even have that many branch options! In addition to all of this, credit unions are just as safe as banks. The National Credit Union Administration, or the NCUA, is an independent United States government agency dedicated to protecting credit unions and our members. All your deposits with credit unions are federally insured by the NCUA up to $250,000.
